I have a mulberry tree. It’s been five years and I’ve never tasted a mulberry. There’s something very wrong with that. We started cutting back the tree every spring before the berries came. They were kind of a nuisance, and these are white mulberries, not the sweet black ones. This year we decided to try again and will actually be picking the fruit instead of letting it rot on the concrete. I’ve been keeping my eye on them. Today the berries are the palest green and just starting to plump. I’m not the only one watching. This afternoon I was treated to a rare display by the family of cardinals nesting in my neighbor’s garden. Back and forth, up in the tree picking fruit, dropping it to the ground below, flying down to find it. It was like a variety show. They looked well fed.
